North American or Chinese Glass

PDFPrintE-mail

One of the biggest controversies when it comes to auto glass is whether or not North American glass is any better than Imported glass...

After hours of talking to both individuals who swear there is a difference and individuals who swear there isn't, we have come to one simple conclusion. There is no difference!

Most "North American" glass suppliers (that are often cited as better quality) have also outsourced their production overseas. The glass they sell is often made in the same (or similar) factories overseas and simply has been branded differently.

It is rare to find a company that doesn't produce at least a significant amount of their glass overseas. It is the belief of this author that the majority of the claims that there is a difference in glass quality are made by individuals who are either trying to "make a sale" or simply don't understand how glass production has evolved.

This is a chart of some of the glass suppliers in China and who they manufacture glass for. You will notice subsiduaries of; Volkswage, Toyoto, Jeep, Honda, Nissan, BMW, Benz, General Motors, Ford, Mazda, Suzuki, Mitsubishi etc. This encompases many of the manufacturers that most consumers assume would be using North American manufactured glass. OEM in this case is imported glass. Also note, this chart is from 2009 and the involvement of imported glass in manufacturing has only increased.
